Have today’s Halloween costumes shifted from fun and scary to an excuse to dress provocatively?

Halloween is a well-loved holiday by children and adults alike. The tradition of stuffing your face full of candy and dressing up to be an entirely different person could be described as the main reason why so many people enjoy the festivities.

In recent years, however, the tradition has shifted from being an innocent holiday to an excuse to dress provocatively. The costumes have gotten smaller, and the motive most people have when they choose their outfits is to be sexy, not scary.

Costume shops offer hundreds of varieties of costumes to choose from. There are scary zombies and gory headless men, sexy bumblebees and French maids.

These costumes are all made for the purpose of dressing up to celebrate Halloween, but you might be shocked to find out where else these costumes are being worn.

Several costumes at local shops can also be found in local pornography stores, organized in the fetish section. These outfits are used for couples when they are experimenting with role playing, and are even described by many of the companies as "for the bedroom only."

Most of the people interviewed at Parkland agreed that they would never shop at a adult store for their Halloween costume. Many said it was too revealing, because the outfits were made purely to be sexually appealing to the wearer’s partner.

One woman, who requested her name be held anonymous, said that she loves Halloween because she can dress to look sexy. Her costume choice this year is a cop, complete with a four inch skirt and high heels.

After being informed that her outfit could also be found inside of a porn shop, she shrugged it off, claiming that as long as your private areas are covered, it is fine.

An employee of a local costume shop, who also requested his name and place of work be kept anonymous, commented that he didn't understand what the big deal was. He believes that people make too big a deal over the way people dress during Halloween.

"There are a lot of immature people, and if everyone wouldn't make such a big deal out of the human body then it wouldn’t be a problem,” the costume shop employee said.

The employee also said that he noticed more females calling the outfits too provocative than males. It was the females who were the ones buying the costumes they were previously mocking, creating a never-ending circle.

The majority of the male population, however, applauded the women on their outfits for the night, saying they were very beautiful and classy. They claimed they did not see anything wrong with girls showing a little extra skin to celebrate Halloween.

Several of the males interviewed claimed that the reason their outfits would show a lot of skin is because they think it would be funny, not sexy. They said they were more worried about the props they could use with their costume, syringes to hold Jack Daniels and suspenders with shot glass holders to make sure they were never without a drink.

Nursing Major Erica Berry commented on why she believes females choose their costumes.

"Most people dress like this because it is socially acceptable. They want to feel sexy and attractive, so they will put it all out there because it's what everyone else is doing," Berry said.

Fine and Applied Arts Professor Amy Stoch commented that young women in college were old enough to dress however they wanted, and the difference between the way some girls dress every day and the way they dress on Halloween is minimal.

The important idea to Stoch was that everyone was keeping safe. Although there are no statistical differences in violence occurring on Halloween as compared to other nights, it is still important to watch out for yourself and your friends.

There is no set opinion on whether girls dress too provocatively on Halloween. The main idea is that as long as you are comfortable with what you are wearing, it is acceptable.

Fortunately for those guys and girls that feel a little bit uncomfortable with the new explicit fad, there are still plenty of gory, headless and terrifying costumes out there that can scare those more scantily clad.
