Due to NCAA rules restrictions the 2011 State Farm Shootout at the Hall on Dec. 10 will be played at the Dodds Athletic Center at Parkland College, and not the Assembly Hall.
In April 2011, the NCAA adopted legislation that prohibits NCAA Division I institutions from hosting non-scholastic basketball events on campus if prospective student-athletes (7th graders and up) are participating in the event. With regard to this new rule, the NCAA Basketball Focus Group has defined an event as a non-scholastic event based not only on the teams participating in the event, but also based on the entity organizing the event. Therefore, an event such as the State Farm Shootout at the Hall that involves scholastic teams, but is organized by a non-scholastic entity such as the Champaign County Convention and Visitors Bureau, falls under the prohibition on Division I institutions hosting non-scholastic basketball events.
In recent weeks, similar scheduled basketball events have been cancelled or relocated at the Peoria Civic Center, Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky and Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, North Carolina because of the misunderstanding as to the application of this rule. In light of these stories, University of Illinois contacted the NCAA Basketball Focus Group to determine if there would be issues with hosting the Shootout at the Hall and were informed on Thursday, December 1 that a violation of NCAA rules would occur if the event were to be played in Assembly Hall on December 10. The next day, University officials informed the CVB that the event could not be played in Assembly Hall.
The Shootout's schedule is as follows:
12:15pm Rantoul vs. Chicago Hope Academy
2:00pm Peoria Manual vs. Springfield Lanphier
3:45pm St. Thomas More vs. Urbana
5:30pm Champaign Centennial vs. Chicago Curie
7:15pm Niles Notre Dame vs. Crete-Monee
Tickets will only be available at the door.
